Are You Insane? No? Well, you just might be by the time we get to the end of the list. 86 reasons why you may have been committed to an Insane Asylum in the late 1800s.

Reason # 15 – Novel Reading

I am not kidding you! Novel reading! What???

Novel writing . . . well yes, I can see how that might at times have qualified one for committal . . . but I have always assumed novel readers to be relatively sane.

Apparently not. Now as far fetched as this reason seems to us today it obviously did have merit and the power to incarcerate you into an asylum back in the day. How useful this would have been for those threatened by someone else’s intellectual prowess.

I’m beginning to see why the asylums became a victim of their own success and eventually became so over full that they ceased to be little more than human warehouses.

Novel reading! Guess I’m through the gates . . .
